Glass Door Homeless Charity

Helping the Homeless in Four London Boroughs

Glass Door was founded over twenty years ago when several churches in Chelsea came together to open their doors and offer shelter, hearty food, and a genuine warm welcome to homeless people one night a week each.

The charity has grown enormously with 829 individuals finding shelter in 34 church shelters in Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Wandsworth and Richmond last winter. Volunteers cooked and served over 30,500 dinners and over 1,400 individuals received advice and support from 15 caseworkers.

On Friday 2nd October, Glass Door’s annual sponsored sleep out will take place in Duke of York Square, Chelsea or you can join in by sleeping out in your house or garden. Since 2013 over 1,100 individuals have slept out raising more than £1m.

Glass Door offers the largest open-access winter shelter in the country offering spaces on a first-come first-served basis, not requiring those seeking shelter to fill in complicated forms. It costs just £15 to provide a guest with an advice session, help to open a bank account, fill out an application or write a new CV.

If you would like to take part do get in touch.

Testimonials

For two years in a row 100% of respondents said they would do the Sleep Out again.

Eddie was a guest of the charity's shelters eight years ago and credits Glass Door with turning his life around. "Workers and volunteers of the charity showed me kindness, a kindness I had never seen before. I started to believe that a different kind of future was possible," says Eddie. After 26 years of sleeping rough, he is now off the street and works for Glass Door as an overnight project worker. Previous guests often return to volunteer at the Sleep Out and in the shelters.
